The Scarlet Letter ~ The Hunting Pocket Pattern

The Scarlet Letter ~ The Hunting Pocket Pattern

This design was inspired by an early 18th century canvaswork piece in the collection of the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh. The topmost panel, worked in petit point cross and tent stitches, shows a hound chasing a fox under an exaggerated fruiting tree. The middle section (which serves as the back of the pocketbook after it is assembled and folded) is worked in florentine stitch. The lower section has a verse worked in petit point, after which an empty space remains on the graph, for you to work your own personal inscription, as we have done on ours. We have shown the piece flat, as it can be finished and framed as a picture, or worked into a pocketbook by lining it and blind stitching or binding the edges—a latter day “hunting” pocket, large enough for credit cards and change! Stitches used are tent and/or cross over one thread of linen, queen, and florentine. The design uses 23 different colors of floss.
